The machine, which starts at just $199 for the kit, or $299 for the fully assembled version (first 200 backers), certainly packs a punch for its price. Based in Arcadia, California, Smartbox Lab has set out to create an affordable FFF 3D printer capable of a build envelope of 200 x 200 x 180mm. Today another new company has launched a Kickstarter camapign for a printer they call the SmartBox. This may be just the start of yet another wave of innovative, affordable machines. Starting at just $189, this machine has brought in more than its $300,000 goal on Kickstarter with a couple days remaining on its funding campaign (ending November 14).
#Ibox printer portable#
A little under a month ago, a Florida-based company called iBox Printers announced what is likely the smallest, most portable 3D printer to ever come to market, the iBox Nano. This race ended after a couple companies had to pull their campaigns due to the infeasibility of manufacturing at these prices while still turning a profit.Īfter a lull that started this summer and lasted several months, it appears as if this race may have just been restarted. Company after company emerged, usually on Kickstarter or Indiegogo, offering a cheaper product, in hopes of attracting the herd of 3D printing enthusiasts over to their campaign. You get what you pay for.If you recall, earlier this year the desktop 3D printing market found itself in a race to the bottom, price wise.
#Ibox printer mods#
If so, it was their own mods who put it there. Was told that thread were deleted because they contained company sensitive information. This thing is based on the Raspberry Pi and runs that OS. Keep in mind they are using mostly GPL and GPLv2 licensed software. Ask why they cannot post an image of the SD card so I can fix it myself and they delete the threads. (I have several other 3D printers, although none of them are resin based).įound on forums that an SD card replacement will 'fix' the issues I am having. Lots of random blobs and extra flashing at random layers and generally inconsistent print quality.
#Ibox printer software#
Get logged in, find that starting X doesn't help as the X interface software doesn't start up either.įinally get the thing on wi-fi via brute force and find some really disappointing prints. What is the login credentials you ask? No idea, guess I'll go search their support forums. Guess what, no X server, just a login prompt. The secondary method of configuring, plug in a keyboard and monitor (oh you have to use a powered hub, because the wi-fi adapter has to be plugged in also and requires a powered hub), and configure via the X server which should be running. The wifi software that they use would not start up due to missing files.

I addition to the reasons you have listed here (most of which I have seen as well), mine arrived in a slightly dysfunctional state. I don't see what iBox Nano can do more than my FFF printer (Weistek WT200). After that, i don't now if I will still using it. I still have two bottle of resin, I will use it to try to improve my skill with this printer. If you are looking for a first 3D printer, look for an FFF printer. Or worst, damage the screen.Ĭonclusion: I will recommend iBox Nano only as a second printer, if you want to test what resin print look like at a cheap cost.

If you accidentally put to much resin on the vat, you will put resin between layer, that will stick and it's really difficult to clean. The printer is very quiet, so you can print during the night, even if you sleep in the same room.Īnother annoying things is that iBox Nano is very cheap.

Marvin keychain or re-scaled batman bust or Groot bust come good from the printer. For exemple, if you want to print a tiny Space Marine (re-scaled to fit on the printer) you will have a really bad result because of the resolution of the screen. What is really disappointing with this printer is that, is a small printer, but you can print really little part. The building area is very small, I was thinking to print "fun" part, like figurine or mini-gear. I bought it without too much thinking, because it was really cheap and I am an huge 3D printer fan (I own an FFF printer and I use an SLS printer at work.).įor me the goal of this printer was to test a "resin printer", what the part look like, how is easy to use, etc.
